At the 2026 OpenAI Dev Day, developers were given direct control over model thinking steps. Through the new Reasoning Effort API parameters, builders can dial latency up or down depending on problem complexity.

For simple customer routing queries, latency is reduced to sub-80ms; for high-stakes cryptographic verification, the model allocates up to 120 seconds of chain-of-thought verification before generating the final byte.
